Capitec’s #LiveBetter experiences is here to uncover some of the best spots around 3 of our major cities. This week we spent time in Pilanesburg at a private game lodge on the exclusive Black Rhino Game Reserve. The reserve, about 200km north west of Johannesburg, is home to the Big 5, more than 350 kinds of birdlife and a range of other indigenous species.

Designed entirely around the wildlife that roams the area, Lush Private Game Lodge offers an exclusive outdoor living experience in a serene setting. The lodge’s décor is intentionally minimalistic, preserving the natural beauty of the location. But you’ll notice small touches of Italian flair representative of the heritage of the Lupini family who own the lodge. Visitors can take their pick of 5 deluxe suites – each offering spectacular bushveld or mountain views. Enjoy a dip in the private splash pool out on the deck or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, try the open-air shower. Each suite is completely secluded and privacy is ensured by the large surrounding trees.
Slip into something smart and stop at the bar for pre-dinner drinks, before moving to the sunken lounges or the outside viewing deck to appreciate breathtaking sunset views. Choose to stay outside and have dinner boma-style or make your way inside to the open-planned dining room. Here, you’ll be in for a treat and experience the finest Italian hospitality, wines and quality cuisine. Meals are plentiful, fresh and delicious, with a strong focus on seasonal ingredients. Special dietary requirements, including vegetarian and gluten-free, are catered for on request.
Game viewing is the highlight of any stay at Lush. The lodge offers 2 game drives a day, one early in the morning and one later in the afternoon. Be sure to pack neutral coloured clothing for your game drive to blend in with the natural surroundings and not to alert the wildlife. Black rhinos, leopards, lions and buffalos are just a few of the indigenous animals you’ll get to see up close on the drive. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars and camera!
Visitors can also explore other leisurely activities such as guided bush walks, hot-air balloon rides or an afternoon of golfing at the championship Gary Player or Lost City golf courses nearby. Both offer 18-hole (par 72) meanders in parkland and bushveld settings.
The true joy of Lush is lying on a wooden deck with your sun hat and sunglasses handy, simply soaking up the tranquil bushveld setting. And with an ice-cold drink in hand while listening to the call of the wild, you’ll never want to leave.
