For 25 years, we’ve challenged the ordinary and stayed true to our belief that banking should be simple, accessible and human.

When we opened our doors on 1 March 2001, banking in South Africa was complex, costly and out of reach for many. Long queues, confusing fees and piles of paperwork were the norm. We set out to change that by building a bank for everyone, guided by one clear idea: simplicity is powerful.

From the start, our journey has been driven by the real needs of the people we serve. When banking felt too complicated, we created Global One. When people couldn’t get to a branch in time, we extended our trading hours. When queues at government offices held families back, we partnered with Home Affairs to bring Smart ID and passport services into our branches.

As our clients grew, we grew with them. We expanded into Business Banking to support the entrepreneurs, invested in financial education in schools and built strong fraud protection to keep your money safe.

Today, over 25 million people trust us with their everyday banking. That trust is a milestone we’re proud of, and it reminds us to keep pushing forward. Our purpose remains the same as it was on Day One: To keep simplifying, innovating and powering more moments that matter in your life.

This milestone honours our journey. But more than that – it signals where we’re going.

  • We received our banking licence and opened our doors on 1 March 2001 with a simple idea: Make banking simple and accessible 
  • We launched Global One in 2003, South Africa's first account with 4 free personalised savings pockets
  • We introduced biometric scanning in 2004 for safer, faster banking

  • We launched workplace banking and SA’s first mobile salary transfer solution, ‘Bank in a Tazz’, in 2005
