From Service Consultant to Manager: Kim Rex's Path to Success at Capitec
This Women’s Month, we’re celebrating the remarkable journeys of the women who make Capitec an extraordinary workplace. We start with the inspiring story of Kim Rex, who rose from service consultant to manager of copywriting. Her journey showcases the power of seizing opportunities, following your passion, and achieving greatness.
A Journey of Growth and Discovery
Kim's career with Capitec began in 2011 when she joined as a service consultant. Her dedication and drive were evident from the start, leading her to transition to the policies and procedure department in 2012. However, Kim's quest for personal and professional growth took her on an exciting detour when she ventured into the world of marketing.
During this period away from Capitec, she uncovered her true passion for brand marketing, PR, social media, and copywriting. This discovery ignited a newfound love for creative storytelling and brand-building, which has since become the cornerstone of her career.
Returning Home to Capitec
In 2018, we were excited to welcome Kim back to Capitec, this time as a copywriter in the brand design team. Over the past 6 years, her growth within our organisation has been nothing short of remarkable. Kim’s creativity, dedication, and commitment to excellence have propelled her from copywriter to senior copywriter, copy lead, and now manager of copywriting.
Kim's personal life is just as vibrant as her professional one. A mother to an energetic boy and 2 adorable fur babies, she balances the demands of work and family with grace. She's married and enjoys spending weekends with her loved ones, whether it’s a casual family outing or a fun gathering with friends. Despite her busy schedule, she still finds time to indulge in her passion for fashion —especially when it comes to beautiful shoes.
A Lifelong Commitment to Learning
Kim's academic journey reflects her dedication to continuous learning and personal growth. She began her studies with a Diploma in Media Studies and Journalism at Rosebank College (IIE), where she was offered a bursary inspired by her initial dream of becoming a sports journalist. Her passion for understanding the world through media led her to pursue a Bachelor of Social Science at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where she triple-majored in Media and Writing, Industrial Sociology, and Gender Studies. This diverse academic background gave Kim a broad perspective and deep understanding of the societal contexts that shape communication and branding.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Kim has since undertaken additional short courses in Digital Marketing, Social Media, Copy-editing and Proofreading, Digital Copywriting, and Creative Thinking. These ongoing efforts to expand her knowledge and skills have made her a versatile and insightful leader, continuously contributing to her professional success at Capitec.
A Visionary Brand Custodian
As manager of copywriting, Kim's role goes beyond crafting compelling messages. She’s become a true brand custodian, creating impactful campaigns that deeply resonate with our clients. Her skill in blending creativity with strategic thinking has significantly shaped Capitec's voice and identity, leaving a lasting impact on our brand and its perception.
Inspiring Others Through Her Journey
Kim's story is a powerful reminder that success is not a destination but a continuous journey of growth, learning, and embracing new challenges. Her willingness to explore various aspects of her career and her drive to excel in each role have inspired many, both within and outside of Capitec.
Her tips to aspiring copywriters
In copywriting, your words should create a bridge between the brand and the audience. Start by truly understanding who you’re writing for – get to the heart of their needs and aspirations. The most effective copy is straightforward yet resonates deeply, making a lasting impact. Throughout your journey, be prepared to face challenges and adapt to changes. Resilience is crucial. Take feedback as a valuable tool for growth, not as a setback. Collaborating closely with other creatives – whether they’re designers, strategists or marketers, will give you a well-rounded perspective to strengthen your work.
Always stay curious and open to learning. Keep an eye on industry trends, read diverse content and make writing a daily habit. The more you write, the clearer your voice becomes and the more you’ll excel at creating copy that inspires and drives action.
