Keep your card safe at the ATM

Scammers use tactics like card swapping and card skimming at ATMs to steal your card and information.

Scammers use hidden devices on ATMs to trap your card and see your PIN. Don't let them steal your money or festive cheer.

Common ATM scams

  • Card swapping: In this scam, criminals work together at a busy place, like a mall. While one person distracts you, the other swaps your card with another card, so they can steal your money.
  • Card skimming: This is when scammers put a skimming device into the ATM, which can be difficult to spot, as they blend in. The device captures data from the magnetic strip on your card and a small camera catches your PIN. Once you leave the ATM, they retrieve your card and can use it to scam you.
  • Card trapping: Scammers put a thin layer of plastic into the card slot that traps your card inside the ATM - even if you were able to withdraw money successfully. In this instance, the scammer would normally be nearby, and would have looked over your shoulder to see your PIN, so they can withdraw money as soon as you leave the ATM without your card.

Protect yourself from ATM scams

  • Check the card slot – if it’s loose, damaged or bulky, don’t use that ATM
  • Card stuck? Stay at the ATM, stop your card on our app and call us immediately
  • Watch out if a stranger gets too close or offers help at an ATM. Rather go into a branch if you need help
  • Turn on app notifications and set daily transaction and withdrawal limits to protect yourself if your card and/or PIN get stolen
