Make sure it’s really a giveaway

Beware of scammers offering giveaways, like airtime or grocery vouchers, at shopping malls and other public places.

Giveaways scams 1100x500

They pretend to be from well-known brands and ask for your ID number or other personal information. They may also ask for your phone or request to take a selfie of you, claiming it’s needed to process your voucher.

Scammers also use a similar tactic online, sending you links to share your personal and banking details to receive the giveaway.

They also promote fake rewards from popular brands to get you to download apps. While you think you are downloading the brand’s app, scammers install dangerous software on your phone, so they can steal your money.

Tips to slam the scams

  • Always verify giveaways by checking the brand’s official website or social media channels
  • Don't share your personal information, like your ID number, or banking details with anyone
  • Never hand over your phone or let someone take a selfie of you in exchange for a giveaway
  • Don’t click on links asking for your personal and banking information
  • Don’t download apps sent through links on WhatsApp or other messaging platforms. Use official app stores only
  • Never ignore warning signs when installing an app
