Banking on our children

A strong future starts with a strong foundation. That’s why we’re banking on Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres to drive lasting change.
Through our partnership with Afrika Tikkun Bambanani, we’re strengthening education across South Africa, giving children the tools and confidence to reach their full potential.
As Jean Rossouw, our Head of CSI and Financial Education, explained: “We acknowledge that education is really important as a bank and brand and therefore most of our CSI is focused on education.
Early childhood development is a major pillar within our education focus, laying a really strong foundation for these learners’ physical, cognitive and emotional development.
We also have strategic partnerships with non-profit organisations who are really making a meaningful difference in education in South Africa. One such partnership is with Afrika Tikkun Bambanani, where we’ve partnered with ECD centres across all 9 provinces to enhance the capacity at these centres.”
Afrika Tikkun Bambanani’s outreach brings quality education to communities that need it most.
“We run a cradle-to-career model that reaches some of South Africa’s most rural areas,” explained Sarika Bachoo, Project Lead for Outreach. “Each centre follows a structured curriculum supported by regular classroom visits and teacher workshops, ensuring every child receives consistent, quality education.”
Together, we’re improving the quality of education by equipping teachers with the training, resources and support they need to nurture every learner’s potential.
At Emmanuel Day Care Centre in the Northern Cape, Principal Janetta Abrahams shared: “We have 17 ECD learners and several with special needs. It was a real highlight when Afrika Tikkun Bambanani and Capitec introduced the programme. It’s lifted our children to a higher level.”
Teachers have also seen positive change. “They gave me a lot of guidance on how to work with the children. It’s really helped improve the children’s weaker areas of development.” said Estelle Ryan, a teacher at Emmanuel Day Care Centre.
This partnership has opened doors to new resources and better teaching tools.
“Our children are exposed to the internet and developing so well,” said Mpho Oortel, Principal at Bambi Preschool. “The Afrika Tikkun Bambanani curriculum has helped us a lot.” Lebogile Liwia Letshabo, Principal at Nkgodisa Day Care Centre, added: “The progress of the children has been incredible.”
Behind the scenes, Project Trainers like Tshepiso Mogadile and Gomolemo Kameel ensure consistency across centres. “I come to the centre 2 or 3 times a month,” said Tshepiso. “I check that the teachers are implementing our curriculum in the right way and whether the kids are interacting well with our curriculum.”
As Sarika Bachoo explained, this work is made possible through partnership: “Our outreach programme is very much dependent on donor funding. Capitec Bank is one of our main donors. They are walking the journey with us to ensure that quality driven education is given to kids that would not necessarily have received it in these communities.”
Jean Rossouw concluded: “We don’t look at it as simply a funding transaction. For Capitec it’s important that we are problem solving. Thinking with our partners and community members is very important to us.
When we bank on each other, we bank on our employees, our partners, community members and parents to get involved and really work together to make a meaningful difference.”
