Avoid becoming a money mule

Have you heard of money muling? It’s one of the fastest-growing scams in South Africa – and even the victims can end up in serious trouble.

Scammers advertise fake jobs like 'remote finance admin', offering people commission to receive money in their own bank accounts and send it on. This is not a job - people are actually paid to move criminal money. When they do this, they become money mules.

Serious problems for victims

Becoming a money mule - whether you mean to or not - can lead to long-term financial and legal problems, such as:

  • Frozen or permanently closed bank accounts
  • Being blacklisted by credit bureaus
  • Difficulty finding employment or accessing credit
  • Criminal charges

Tips to protect yourself

  • Never use your personal bank account to move money for others and don’t accept commission for handling transactions
  • Always make sure a company is legit by doing your own research
  • If a company communicates mainly through WhatsApp or Telegram, it’s a red flag

If something feels off, don’t take the risk. Report it to your bank or the South African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) by visiting www.safps.org.za.
