How to stay safe from fake apps

Online scams are getting smarter – but staying safe is simpler than you think.

Scammers use fake adverts, friendly calls and malicious apps to take control of your phone and empty your bank account – all while pretending to represent trusted brands like DStv, SAA, Qatar Airways or even your bank.

How the scam works

  • You see a sponsored ad on Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp

For example; ‘DStv has launched a new special event’ or ‘SAA/Qatar/Emirates Special – 90% OFF flights! Limited seats available – download our exclusive booking app!’.

  • You tap the link to install an app to get the deal

A friendly ‘consultant’ calls you to help you complete the process. Your phone shows warnings like 'harmful app blocked'. The professional-sounding 'consultant' tells you to ignore the warning.

  • The app is actually malware and has access to all your other apps

Your device screen looks normal but in the back, scammers are controlling your apps and stealing your money.

Red flags to watch out for

  • Special deals or giveaways that sound too good to be true
  • Links in ads telling you to download an app to get the deal or giveaway
  • Calls or WhatsApp messages from people claiming to help install or set up the app

How to protect yourself

  • Beware of deals on social media. Verify special offers directly on the company's official channels
  • Only download apps from official app stores (Google Play or Apple App Store)
  • Never install apps from links in messages on social media, WhatsApp or SMSs
  • Stop immediately if you see a warning like 'harmful app blocked’
