Creating and seeing his work come to life is what makes Chef Ayabonga Gope tick, and he’s grateful to his mother for helping him realise his dream of working with food. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I finished school,” he says. “My mom suggested going into the food industry.”

Living better through making healthy food choices is important to Aya. “I love trying out new combinations with fruit and veggies. Because I’m always on the road, I find a smoothie is easy to make, pack and drink on the go. It’s my go-to healthy food,” he enthuses.

His “live better” advice is simple: always have a list. “Whether you are planning on doing some shopping, planning for your future or going through a difficult time, having a list helps keep you grounded and focused on your goal.”

We’ve partnered with Dis-Chem to help make saving even simpler, which means everyone can live better. We asked Aya to create the ultimate health kit on 2 budgets.

“My pantry is full of spices and other healthy ingredients,” he says. “The best part is that I can buy these healthy snacks, and more, at Dis-Chem. Plus, by swiping my Capitec card, I earn 2% cash back that goes straight into a separate savings account.”

“Getting a budget of R500 and R1 000 to spend on creating 2 health kits was really exciting, but also challenging. Dis-Chem has such a wide range that I was spoilt for choice. I actually had to remind myself of my own advice to write a list so that I could stick to my budget,” he laughs.

Ultimate save kit:

  • Lifestyle Food coconut milk (400ml)
  • Lifestyle Food coconut cream (400ml)
  • Lifestyle Food xylitol (1kg)
  • Lifestyle Food unsweetened barista blend oat milk (1L)
  • Lifestyle Food honey (1kg)
  • Lifestyle Food sweetened almond drink (1L)
  • Lifestyle Food lite coconut milk (400ml)
  • Lifestyle Food chia seeds (100g)

“It’s really about finding a way to follow a healthy lifestyle with pantry staples,” Aya says. “Coconut milk, for example, is so versatile. You can use it as a dairy substitute in so many ways: you can add it to your coffee, in smoothies, curries or soups, and it also comes with health benefits.”

“Honey is also a splurge for me, so I had to include a 1kg bottle. But because buying in bulk is often a good way to save a bit of extra money, I’ve included it in both kits,” he adds.

Ultimate splurge kit:

  • Lifestyle Food prunes (750g)
