Common investment scams to avoid

Investing is a smart way to build your financial future, but it can also be a space where scammers thrive. With promises of fast, risk-free returns, scammers are getting creative and more convincing.

WhatsApp or Telegram investment groups

You’re added to a group where people post ‘proof’ of massive returns. The chat is filled with screenshots, success stories and praise for a so-called investment guru. It may seem legit, but it’s not.

These groups are often run by scammers using fake profiles and testimonials to build your trust. Some early investors may get paid, but most will lose their money.

Why it works: It creates social pressure. When it looks like others are making money, you may feel like you’re missing out.

Fake investment ads

Scammers use our name, logo and even our CEO’s photo, promising guaranteed returns. These ads pop up on social media, Google or WhatsApp – but we don’t offer investments. If you see our branding on anything investment-related, it’s a scam.

Why it works: You trust us, so it looks official and safe, but it’s not.

Claims of government or business backing

Some scammers claim to have ties with government or big businesses. They use fake contracts and success stories to promise big profits, gain your trust and convince you to invest a lot of money quickly.

Why it works: It sounds professional and reliable. When big names are mentioned, you're more likely to trust the offer and invest.

Stay alert

  • Real investments don’t promise fast, risk-free profits
  • If you’re added to an investment group on WhatsApp, block it
  • Always confirm offers on a company’s official channels
  • Real investment companies won’t pressure you to invest
  • If the company isn’t registered with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), it’s not safe
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam
