The Capitec journey has always been paved by our clients.

For 25 years, Capitec has returned millions of hours in saved time, millions of Rands in saved fees, and immeasurable dignity back to the people of South Africa.

In 2001, the financial services landscape was exclusive, expensive, and painfully complex. Long queues, towering stacks of paperwork, and hidden costs were the accepted reality. It was against this backdrop that a small team of trailblazers set out to build a bank for every South African. The guiding philosophy was beautifully clear: simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

From the day Capitec first opened its doors, our story has been intertwined with the story of the South African people. We knew that to make a meaningful difference, we had to dismantle the barriers that kept everyday citizens locked out of jobs, entrepreneurship, education and more.

Client-driven innovation

Our evolution over the past quarter of a century has been driven by one simple metric: client frustration. Wherever there was friction, we sought to build a solution.

When clients were drowning in complex account structures, we launched the easy-to-get Global One account in 2003. When working, South Africans couldn’t get to a branch during standard hours, so we pioneered Sunday trading. That same drive to solve everyday problems continues in our work to this day.

We know that lacking an identity document locks citizens out of the modern economy. That is why we recently partnered with the Department of Home Affairs to roll out Smart ID and passport services. By building a proprietary digital integration, we are removing the anxiety of long queues and lost wages, processing Smart IDs in under five minutes right in the heart of our communities.

We also recognised that the same people relying on us for personal banking are the entrepreneurs driving South Africa's economy. By launching Capitec Business and the Entrepreneurship card, we removed the red tape from commercial banking. Today, we proudly serve over 300 000 business and merchant clients, giving the missing middle of the economy the low-friction digital tools they need to scale, create jobs, and thrive.

Innovating through our clients meant looking beyond transactional products. It meant investing directly into the fabric of our communities. Through the Capitec Bank bursary programme and our financial literacy training in schools, we have taken banking out of the branch and into the classroom. By empowering the next generation with essential financial education and funding, we are helping families break cycles that prevent the building of true generational wealth.

Giving back

Giving back isn’t just about what we offer; it's about what we protect. As financial crimes become increasingly sophisticated, we have invested heavily in defending our clients’ hard-earned money.

Our dedicated fraud taskforce of over 400 specialists uses industrial-scale AI to act as a shield for your finances. This technology isn’t theoretical – it makes a tangible difference. In the last year alone, our AI warnings stopped over 23 000 scam payments and proactively blocked more than 70 000 mule accounts – saving our clients over R300 million.

Beyond security, we give back to the daily lives of South Africans by continuously driving down our costs. We froze our core banking fees to provide structural relief when the economy gets tough. We launched Capitec Connect – which now empowers over 1.1 million clients – with a range of data bundles they can control, ensuring digital access remains a lifeline, not a luxury. Added to this, our Capitec Rewards programme has completely re-engineered banking rewards, moving away from expiring points to give back real, tangible cash.

A milestone of trust

Today, Capitec stands at a monumental milestone: 25 million clients.

Over half of South Africa’s adult population now carries a Capitec card. This includes over 12 million youth clients, a strong indicator of trust from the country’s next generation of innovators.  In millions of households, from Johannesburg’s bustling taxi ranks to the quiet rural towns of the Northern Cape, we are the trusted enabler of daily life.

Over the last 25 years, Capitec has grown up alongside South Africa. We started with an almost impossible dream of creating a bank for everyone. Today, our purpose remains unchanged: to keep innovating, to keep simplifying, and to keep making a meaningful difference in the lives of the 25 million people who call Capitec home.
